July 12 - July 24, 2006

Discover for yourself the amazing culture and landscape of Costa Rica , a country devoted to preserving its priceless natural resources. Explore environs of active volcanoes, cloudforest, and nature preserves with local naturalists. Boat down a river alive with exotic birds, caiman and howler monkeys. Meet the local people, feast on traditional foods, soak in bubbling hot springs or bask on warm beaches. Along the way, learn about the unique flora, fauna, history, and culture of the intriguing Central American country.

July 12: Fly from USA to San Jose, Costa Rica
Pick up at San Jose Airport and transfer to the Best Western Hotel Irazu or similar. Enjoy the beautiful pool and complementary evening cocktail. Meals on own due to individual flight schedules.

July 13: Tarcolitos River-Jaco, Costa Rica (B, L, D)
Transfer to the Hotel Villa Lapas. This beautiful hotel is nestled in the forest next to the Carara Biological Reserve on the Pacific Ocean . The Tarcolitos River flows next to the hotel where guests can look for white ibis, kingfishers and other wildlife. After check-in, visit the town of Jaco where you can shop, exchange money or just explore this wonderful Costa Rican town. Or enjoy a swim in the Pacific Ocean . Later, enjoy a nature hike along the Tarcolitos River to search for crocodiles and scarlet macaws. Hotel Villa Lapas or similar.

July 14: Manuel Antonio National Park (B, L, D)
Visit Manuel Antonio National Park where the forest meets the sea. Bring your snorkeling gear for a swim in the warm azure waters in search of numerous species of tropical fish. After lunch, we will have a guided walking tour into the Park's forest in search of howler, white-faced and squirrel monkeys. On the "sloth trail" you are sure to see the two and three-toed sloths and other wildlife. Hotel Villa Lapas or similar.

July 15 : Carara Biological Reserve-Arenal (B, L)
This morning, we will hike in the Carara Biological Reserve in hopes of seeing scarlet macaws. The Reserve is one of two places in Costa Rica where the macaws can be found and is a true birding paradise. This afternoon, we will drive to the Arenal Volcano area. In the evening, we will visit a Hot Springs with many pools of naturally heated water from the volcano. Dinner in the town of Fortuna . Accommodations will be at the Arenal Paraiso or similar.

July 16: Arenal Volcano-Monteverde (B, L, D )
Early morning departure for Mondeverde Cloudforest Reserve. We will spend the day hiking through this incredible ecosystem. This area is noted for its chaotic vegetation, birds and surreal assortment of amphibians and insects. The most notable resident is the Quetzal. Hotel Belmar or similar.

July 17 : Monteverde (B)
FREE DAY! There are many activities to chose from such as: forest hikes, canopy tours, horseback riding, or just relaxing. Before dinner, soak in one or all of the pools.

July 18 : Monteverde - San Jose (B )
After breakfast, we will depart for San Jose . Along the way, we will visit the Butterfly farm and wildcat rehabilitation sanctuary. Best Western Irazu or similar.

July 19 : San Jose-Tortuguero (B, L,D)
This morning, we will transfer by boat to Tortuguero National Park . Along the way we will take in the beautiful scenery and local wildlife. Tonight, we have a guide hike to watch the magnificent Atlantic Green sea Turtles lay eggs on the beach. Mawamba Lodge or Similar.

July 20 : Tortuguero National Park (B, L)
Via boat tours and hikes, today we will have an opportunity to fully explore this area known for its maze of rivers and canals. This Amazon-like environment is home to spider monkeys, river turtles, river otters, basilisk lizards, caiman, many species of shore and forest birds, and numerous other wildlife.

July 21: Tortuguero-Cahuita (B, L)
Our bus will meet us at the dock to take us to the Atlantic town of Cahuita . Accommodations are the Atlantida Lodge or similar.

July 22: Free day in Cahuita (B)
Enjoy the beach, horseback ride, snorkel, fish, hike, visit the Aviarios del Caribe (animal rehabilitation center), bike on the trails of Cahuita National Park, etc. Atlantida Lodge or similar.

July 23: Cahuita-Braulio Carrillo National Park-San Jose (B, L, D)
This morning we depart, we will stop for lunch at the Danta Inn and then to the Rain Forest Aerial Tram where the canopy has the greatest diversity of epiphytes in the world. Glide through the treetops as a naturalist guide points out plants and animal in this unique environment. Afterwards we will have a walk on the forest floor. Farewell Dinner. San Jose Hotel Irazu.

July 24: Transfer to airport for departure. (B)
Extended stays can be arranged to go white water rafting, sightseeing, shopping, visits museum, etc.

Dates: July 12-24, 2006

Price: Pricing $1695 per person based on double occupancy (Single supplement is an additional $350) and a minimum of 10 participants and includes: Airport transfers, all accommodations, ground transportation, meals as describes, guiding services, and entry fees. (Not included: International airfare, airport taxes, gratuity to guide, or alcoholic beverages.) A $350 deposit is required to secure your spot on the tour. The balance is by due June 7.

TEACHERS! Continuing education credit (2 semester hours) can be arranged for an additional price. Or bring a group of students for a travel-study tour and the group leader land costs will be minimal or free.
