The Creation of Our Non-Profit Foundation
The initial inspiration for establishing a non-profit foundation came from Kindred Spirits Tour & Travel, which was established in 2003. The company operates educational tours and volunteer vacations within the United States and around the world. In partnership with local communities, people come together to work side-by-side while fostering peaceful relationships. A percentage of all tour profits is donated to the foundation.

The immediate objective of our non-profit foundation, Kindred Spirits Foundation is to better meet the needs of these partner communities. Moreover, we recognize the tremendous need to support and strengthen impoverished communities in developing countries around the world.

Poverty in the Developing World
More than one billion people in the world live on less than one dollar a day. Another 2.7 billion struggle to survive on less than two dollars per day. Poverty in the developing world, however, goes far beyond income poverty. It means having to walk more than one mile every day simply to collect water and firewood; it means suffering diseases that were eradicated from rich countries decades ago. Every year eleven million children die-most under the age of five and more than six million from completely preventable causes like malaria, diarrhea and pneumonia.
In some deeply impoverished nations less than half of the children are in primary school and under 20 percent go to secondary school. Around the world, a total of 114 million children do not get even a basic education and 584 million women are illiterate.

Our Mission
The mission of Kindred Spirits Foundation is to create a global network of people dedicated to supporting local and sustainable development efforts which improve the quality of life in impoverished communities worldwide.

About Our Work
Our Foundation seeks to combine financial support and hands-on partnership to strengthen impoverished communities worldwide. This unique approach accelerates community development through its grantmaking and by enabling donors to work side by side with a given community on a project of its choosing.

Consistent with Kindred Spirits Tour and Travel, our Foundation recognizes that people in local communities can best define meaningful solutions for sustainable social change.
For this reason, Kindred Spirits Foundation empowers groups to make their own decisions about how to use the grant money to best meet the needs and priorities of each community.

Community Programs
The programs we have identified as priorities are education, economic development, health care, infrastructure development, emergency relief and conflict resolution, cultural preservation and environmental sustainability. These programs will form the core of our initial grantmaking work.

Kindred Spirits Foundation currently works in Africa, Latin America and Asia. We are in the process of soliciting grant proposals from all communities where Kindred Spirits Tour and Travel works, including: Tanzania, Nepal, Peru, Ecuador, Guatemala, Mexico, and the Dominican Republic. Our initial grants will be in the $500 range, which can make a tremendous difference in developing nations. In the future, we will expand our grantmaking to other communities and countries within these continents. Download the Kindred Spirits Foundation Grant Proposal here.
